My research interests have focused on respiratory and metabolic responses to exercise. A wide range of human subjects has been studied and has included elite athletes, untrained men and women, and the elderly population. Collaboration with Drs. Gilders, Hikida, and Staron has produced several studies, which investigated the effects of both high intensity and long duration exercise training on the relationship of intramuscular responses (utilization) to respiratory, cardiovascular, and endocrine changes (transport). Ventilation, gas transport, metabolic markers, cardiovascular functions and muscle cell morphology, histochemistry, and biochemistry are compared in most of our studies.
